Der Aufsatz untersucht einige grundlegende Merkmale der aktuellen überwachungskritischen Proteste. Das geschieht durch die exemplarische Analyse von visuellen und sprachlichen Bildern dieser Protestbewegung. Dabei zeigt sich eine Spaltungslinie zwischen einem bürgerrechtsorientierten und einem link(sradikal)en Pol des Protests. Übergreifend ist die Fokussierung auf staatliche Überwachung auffallend, oft ohne dass die Kritik selbst den staatlichen Referenzrahmen verlässt. Problematische Kontextualisierungen von Überwachung werden insbesondere in den vielfältigen Bezugnahmen der Überwachungskritik auf Nationalsozialismus und DDR/Stasi gesehen. Die Autorinnen plädieren für einen reflexiven Umgang mit der Protestbildproduktion, der sich bewusst macht, dass (strategische) Intention, Expressionsfunktion und Rezeptionsweisen oft weit auseinanderklaffen können.
The authors analyse several characteristics of current protests against surveillance in Germany and the fragmentation of the movement. This political analysis is primarily conducted through an exemplary examination of the movement’s slogans, symbols, metaphors, and visual images. A main political cleavage, the authors show, divides a liberal current and a radical/left current. Unifying is the strong focus on state surveillance. Yet, the critique itself often does not transcend this statist framework. The pictorial contextualisation of today’s surveillance is regarded as highly ambivalent, especially because of its manifold references to Germany's Nazi and Stasi past. The authors advocate a self-reflexive handling of the metaphors and imagery within the protest movement. The divergence of the (strategic) intention, the expressive function and the multi-faceted reception of the images, they argue, should become obvious.
