Abstract:

The aim of the project was to extend the multi slice method for HRTEM image simulation to the field of icosahedral quasicrystals. Icosahedral quasicrystalline compounds of the ternary system Zn-Mg-Y and Zn-Mg-Er were characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy end electron diffraction. The investigation was focused of features in direct and reciprocal space on the Y- and Er-composition. The quasicrystalline material is usually accompanied by crystalline phases. The knowledge of the structures of these phases may be helpful when structural models for the icosahedral phases are to be developed. Therefore the structure of a hexagonal phase (A-phase) in the the Zn-Mg-Y system was determined. The crystal structure of a cubic approximant in the Zn-Mg-Er system has been solved by a combination of high resolution electron microscopy and x-ray powder diffraction. The cubic R-phase crystallizes in the space group F-43m with a lattice constant of a=20.20 Å. The cubic R-phase is found to be a metastable phase, which is ordered to a rhombohedral phase. Thus, the rhombohedral phase (M-phase) can be considered as a superlattice ordered phase of the present cubic phase. The rhombohedral M-phase crystallizes in the space group R3m with lattice constants of a=b=14.28 Å and c=69.97 Å.
