Abstract:

The dissertation deals with the special and relatively unknown vocational school form: the technical colleges for business management (Fachschule für Betriebswirtschaft). The thesis moves along the shared lines of historical, empirical and socio-political analysis. The first section of the work presents the historical reconstruction of this school form up to the present. Since there are hardly any published materials on the subject, the research is also based on interviews with experts. The evaluation of the technical colleges for business management from the subjective view of its students forms the second section. The choice for this form of evaluation evolved as a result of student discontent with instruction and teachers which became evident to the author of this dissertation, who taught at such a school for many years. The input of the students should further the examination of the future prospects of this school form. The investigation developed into an explorative study by means of a questionnaire which was answered at the beginning of 1999 by all graduating classes in Hessen at public colleges for economics with the special focus on business management. The results of the quantitative items are presented as descriptions and in the form of tables. Thereafter the qualitative questions about semantic differentiation are thematically arranged and additional characteristic statements are presented as full text quotations. All results are placed into the context of the current discussion about global changes regarding work and occupations as well as education an school reform. This context is created by coupling the results with the currant discussion about the function of technical colleges, the schools´ quality, the professionalism of the instructors and the development of the schools´ profiles. Under the aspects of four categories: the content, the organization, the people involved and the structure, perspectives are developed for the reform of the technical colleges for business management, and the chances for the implementation of such reforms are also examined.
