Abstract:

The present dissertation deals with the development of a catalyst for the electrocatalytic reduction of oxygen in acidic media based on Fe-N-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The synthesized catalysts were examined regarding their electrochemical behaviour by using cyclic voltammetry (CV), rotating disc electrode (RDE) and impedance spectroscopy and characterized with physic-chemical methods. The electrocatalytic reduction of oxygen plays a crucial role in the generation of electricity in batteries and fuel cells. The state of the art catalyst for this reaction is based on highly dispersed platinum on carbon supports (usually carbon blacks). The high price of platinum is one of the major problems in the course of commercialisation of fuel cells. Therefore it is important to substitute the platinum based catalysts by cheaper alternatives. One possible alternative is based on heat treated (up to 950 °C, inert gas atmosphere) carbon materials impregnated with transition metals- nitrogen centres. The general aim of the dissertation was to extend the concept of the modified carbons to MWCNTs and thereby make use of the extraordinary properties of MWCNTs, like high electric conductivity, chemical inertness and high temperature and oxidative stability for catalytic applications. MWCNTs were modified with iron nitrogen centres by the use of iron-nitrogen-chelate complexes (porphyrine and phenanthroline) or by using an iron salt (iron acetate) und heat treated in an inert gas atmosphere at high temperatures up to 950 °C. Beside the analysis of the effect of different synthesis parameters on the oxygen reduction activity (e.g. influence of the iron-nitrogen compound, influence of the nitrogen content and influence of the impregnation method) the main focus was on the examination of the effect of high temperature treatment of the modified MWCNTs which is a crucial step for the activity and stability of the catalyst. By the combination of electrochemical methods (CV and RDE) and different analysis techniques like XPS-, TEM- and TG-/MS-methods a better understanding of the processes taking place during the heat treatment and their impact on the electrochemical properties could be obtained.
