Abstract:

Alternative AbstractLanguage

The retail banking sector is subject to rapid changes. Globalization, deregulation, securitization, disintermediation as well as the technological progress have significantly intensified the competition and have reduced the profit margins of the banks. Due to the increasing number of Internet users, the digital character of banking services and the low costs of the network-based distribution of financial products, the handling of communication and information technologies has become a major requirement for strategic success in the retail banking sector. In-house the challenge is to integrate the heterogeneous IT-systems and to implement suitable Internet interfaces. On the market side value-added services have to be offered and, according to the wishes of the clients, banking services have to be made accessible via multiple channels. This work aims at analyzing the potential of using the Extensible Markup Language (XML) and intelligent agents in retail banking and attempts to identify their impact to the clients as well as to the banks. In the presence of the new technologies and based on those results it is discussed which strategies can be implemented to assure the long-term competitiveness of retail banks and which position those banks will take in future e-commerce.
