The Dresden villas of the von Klemperer family

Abstract

The von Klemperer family inhabited three villas in Dresden, the construction and usage history of which is examined. Gustav (1852-1926) and Charlotte (1857-1934) lived in a villa on Wiener Strasse at the corner of Gellertstrasse, where their three sons, Victor (1876-1943), Herbert Otto (1878-1951) and Ralph Leopold (1884-1956) grew up. Victor had a magnificent house built for himself at Tiergartenstrasse 64, Ralph moved into a villa at Wiener Strasse 86. Two of these three villas fell victim to the Second World War.

The von Klemperer family left Germany in the late 1930s and sought refuge in other countries. Today, there is little left in Dresden to remind us of the once influential and respected von Klemperer family.

Die Familie von Klemperer bewohnte in Dresden drei Villen, deren Bau- und Nutzungsgeschichte untersucht wird. Gustav (1852-1926) und Charlotte (1857-1934) lebten in einer Villa auf der Wiener Straße Ecke Gellertstraße, in der deren drei Söhne, Victor (1876-1943), Herbert Otto (1878-1951) und Ralph Leopold (1884-1956) heranwuchsen. Victor ließ sich ein prächtiges Haus auf der Tiergartenstraße 64 errichten, Ralph bezog eine Villa auf der Wiener Straße 86. Zwei dieser drei Villen fielen dem Zweiten Weltkrieg zum Opfer.

Die Familie von Klemperer verließ in den späten 1930er Jahren Deutschland und suchte in anderen Ländern Zuflucht. Heute erinnert in Dresden nur noch wenig an die einst so einflussreiche und angesehene Familie von Klemperer.
