Abstract

Jahrhundert an nachgezeichnet.

Translation of abstract (English)

This dissertation is dedicated to the music theory of Zhu Zaiyu (1536-1611) as well as important contexts. Zhu was a Chinese hereditary prince of the imperial clan of the Ming Dynasty. He is regarded as the most important music theorist in Chinese history. He received the previous history of music theory critically and comprehensively. As a Confucian polymath, Zhu developed the first equal temperament in the Chinese context as well as innovative tone systems. At the same time, Zhu's music-theoretical insights represented an important sovereign knowledge, which was supposed to provide an important benchmark for the construction of an ideal community. This dissertation represents an intensive basic research. Historical and systematic questions were equally important. Historical perspectives concern both the origin and the social context of Zhu's life, the history of the development of his works and research results, as well as explanations of the historical background of Zhu Zaiyu's ideas, music-cultural and thought-historical contexts of Zhu Zaiyu's music theory, and the transcultural reception of his musical thinking. The work contains the first critical edition of the text of the most important biographical document on the personal background of Zhu Zaiyu in traditional Chinese characters as well as the first translation of this document from Chinese. The cross-cultural reception of Zhu's music-theoretical ideas in China, Europe and America is traced from the 18th century onwards. It also contains a terminological study of the genesis of the modern, Western-influenced concept of the interval and the musical scale in China since the beginning of the 20th century, which shows that the horizons of pre-modern and modern Chinese musical thought must not be mixed or exchanged unthinkingly. The systematic questions of the study problematize above all the contents of Zhu's music theory: These parts of the work contain the first systematic compilation of the most important passages on Zhu's music theory. They are taken from Zhu Zaiyu's Complete Works on Musical Theory (Chinese: Yuelüquanshu). At the same time, this dissertation contains the first translation of these important passages from Chinese into German, respectively into another language at all. The translations are accompanied by detailed, more historical introductions as well as more systematic explanations of the contents and text-immanent contexts. These explanations represent the first detailed systematic analysis of the main contents of Zhu Zaiyu's music theory in the German language. In addition, the work contains a Chinese-German table of contents with short synopses of Zhu Zaiyu's Complete Works on Musical Theory. This should be of relevance for future research as well, because the original work has no table of contents and this one has been created here for the first time ever.
