This study introduces a new concept for the mediation of meaning in literary texts as well as a new approach to German-speaking philology: the concept of "Mentalstil" (mind style). "Mentalstilistik" points towards a special aspect of style that incorporates attitudes and opinions, moral concepts, and psychological sensibilities – in short, mental concepts and mental states of both characters and narrators. The study of mind style thus connects style and narrative theory, literary studies and linguistics. The monograph develops constituents of a "mind style stylistics" with a research-historical, methodological, and theoretical focus, as well as through textual analysis. The theoretical model developed here is applied to the short fiction and novels of Margaret Atwood, thus rendering this volume also the first German-language book-length study of Canadian writer Margaret Atwood.
