Zusammenfassung
This article deals with the question of whether bible translations form an adequate empirical data basis for research in diachronic linguistics. It argues that in contrast to what is generally assumed the comparison of different bible translations has several advantages over other methods of (diachronic) corpus linguistics. Using translations for diachronic research allows to exclude that differences between texts from different periods are due to differences in the content or the type of texts which are compared. Since they contain the same ‘message’ and belong to the same type of text, it is possible to see how the ‘same message’ is expressed at different times. Bible translations,in particular, have the advantage that they are mostly prose texts, thus offering a more reliable data base for the analysis of grammatical rules and their diachronic development than poetic texts. Given that bible translations have a long tradition in many Romance languages and that a large number of bible translations from different time periods exist, these translations form an excellent empirical foundation for diachronic corpus analysis in Romance.
