Zusammenfassung

The stratigraphy of littoral sediments in the reedbelt at Lake Constance-Untersee, the contents of nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter, and the rate of litter breakdown were investigated. All parameters were found to be a function of the altitude relative to the lake level, that is they depend on the duration of the yearly submergence. Phragmites australis by far is the most important source of organic matter, whereas the input from the open lake is negligible. The accumulation of organic matter is probably due to nutrient limitation of the microbial breakdown of the litter. It is suggested that the reedbelt act as a sink for suspended and dissolved nutrients coming from the lake. Regarding the eutrophication of Lake Constance-Untersee and the causes of the 'die-back' of reeds, no surplus accumulation of nutrients in the upper sediment layers could be demonstrated. A model of littoral sedimentation and the impact of the covering by reed vegetation is developed.
