As a scientific an literary 'proved' genre the essay seems to be quite accepted today. It is allowed to argue in a way that other genres are not allowed to do. 'Free', independend, without any need for systematisation and in a special, personal way of thinking it can develop ideas beyond any furhter scientific or social ambitions.
- The following work tries to set an end to this - more the less - not reflected scientific common-sense-thinking. The essay here is regarded as a genuine and essential, as a functional form of modern communicattion. Not on the usual turning point between literature and philosophy but within a modern history of media and (European) culture the essay is situated in this work. On this background it seems to be a primary form of communication which perspectives the virtual construction of the modern human being in a very progressive way.
Zusammenfassung in einer weiteren Sprache
Als wissenschaftlich und literarisch geadelte 'Gattung' scheint der Essay heute allgemein anerkannt zu sein. Als ubiquitäre 'kleine Form' darf er anscheinend das, was andere, dagegen scheinbar seriösere Großformen des Erzählens und Berichtens nicht dürfen, nämlich 'frei', rein subjektiv und ohne Zwang zum System wie zur 'Wahrheit' geistreich formulieren und assoziieren.
- Mit dieser nicht nur geistes- und literaturwissenschaftlichen, sondern allgemein öffentlichen Denkgewohnheit bricht die vorliegende Arbeit. Sie nimmt den Essay als genuin moderne, als funktionale Form jenseits überkommener Gattungshierarchien ernst. Gegen seine gängigen Verortungen an der vermeintlichen Schnittstelle von 'hoher' Literatur und wissenschaftlicher Prosa wird der Essay hier inmitten einer neuzeitlich-modernen Medien- und (europäischen) Kulturgeschichte plaziert. Er erscheint dann als diejenige (Selbst-)Reflexionsform der Moderne, die die Beschaffenheit des 'neuen', medial und virtuell ganz und gar durchformten Menschen gleichermaßen kritisch thematisiert wie konstruktiv perspektiviert und emphatisch bejaht.
